Recipes
The following is a list of Holiday Recipes for Birds, which also make clever
gift giving items as well. Have fun making these recipes to share with birds that
visit your yard.
Birdseed Ornaments – 6 Ornaments
6 slices bread
3 egg whites
2 cups mixed birdseed
Assorted
Ribbons
Fine gauge Floral Wire
Hot glue & glue sticks
Cookie Cutters, stocking, wreath
or star shaped
Directions
Cut each of the slices of bread into the ornament shapes, using the cookie
cutters. Save the rest of the slice of bread for later use, such as bread crumbs.
Next, brush a layer of egg white onto the bread cutouts, using a pastry brush. Press
a thick layer of birdseed onto each coated cutout, and then bake the ornament at
350 degrees for 10 minutes on a non-stick baking sheet. Allow to cool completely.
Note: These
are not for human consumption.
To make hangers, cut floral wire into approximately
7” pieces. Insert the end of the wire through the top of each ornament, at least
½” from the edge. Form a loop with each wire and twist the ends together to secure. Tie
the ribbons into simple bows and hot-glue them in place over the twisted wire.
Shortbread – For the Birds
½ cup vegetable shortening
2 cup all-purpose flour
½ cup
packed brown sugar
½ cup nutmeats
½ cup cranberries or raisins
Directions
Cream the shortening. Add sifted flour and sugar to mixture, stir in nuts
and cranberries. Mixture should be crumbly. Add water if needed. Cut into cookie
ornaments for outside tree or pat onto cookie sheet for crumbing. Bake at 350 degrees
until lightly brown, about 15 minutes.
Note: These are not for human consumption.
Popcorn Balls – For the Birds
2 quarts freshly popped corn
½ cup packed brown sugar
¼
cup shortening
1 cup peanut hearts
½ cup light corn syrup
¼ tsp. baking soda
Directions
Grease baking sheet, spread nuts and popcorn. Next, combine shortening,
sugar and syrup, heating the mixture at medium low, stirring until 250 degrees on
candy thermometer. Then, remove from heat. Next, stir in baking soda. Pour at
once over popcorn and nuts. Toss rapidly with wide spatula until pieces are coated. Roll
into balls once cooled. Hang outside on tree.
Note: These are not for human consumption.
No Melt Suet – For the Birds
1 cup crunchy peanut butter
1 cup lard
2 cups quick cook
oats
2 cup cornmeal
1 cup white flour
1/3 cup sugar
Directions
Melt lard and peanut butter in microwave or stovetop pan. Stir in remaining
ingredients. Pour suet mixture into containers sized to fit suet feeders. Freeze
and store the suet mix in the freezer. Keep in mind; these suet cakes do not melt
in warm weather, but some are likely to sag in hot weather.
These can be formed into
3” to 4” balls or bell shapes and hung in plastic net bags such as produce comes
in, and decorate with a ribbon bow. Your woodpeckers will love this suet. For an
extra treat, you can add raisins or nuts to the mix or press them into the surface
before freezing.
Note: These are not for human consumption.
